When we talk about nation-building and progress, the role of educated women stands at the forefront. Women are often described as the backbone of society — and rightly so. An educated woman can uplift an entire family and, by extension, the community around her. It is with this vision that the Ajmal Foundation embarked on a noble journey to empower women through education in Assam, leading to the establishment of the Maryam Ajmal Women’s College of Science & Technology (MAWCST), Hojai, in 2006.
A Vision for Women’s Empowerment
Understanding the need for focused women’s education in the region, especially for the socially and economically backward Muslim and minority communities, the Ajmal Foundation founded Maryam Ajmal College Hojai, starting with the science stream. In 2011, this effort was further extended with the establishment of Maryam Ajmal Women’s College of Arts, Hojai. Both institutions are recognized as minority educational institutions under section 2(g) of the National Commission for Minority Education.
These colleges provide modern, high-quality education and offer several scholarships and concessions for meritorious students. Over time, they have grown into symbols of empowerment and academic excellence for women in Assam.
MAWCST Hojai – A Beacon of Educational Excellence
Maryam Ajmal Women’s College of Science & Technology (MAWCST Hojai) has blossomed into one of the finest institutions under the Ajmal Foundation. What sets this institution apart is its unwavering commitment to providing quality science education to women, thereby contributing to social transformation and empowerment.
The college was named in loving memory of Late Maryam Un-Nisa Ajmal, the revered mother of the Ajmal brothers. Their goal was not just to honor her legacy but also to equip women with the tools to thrive in a world driven by scientific and technological advancements.
The Degree section of the college was officially launched on 16th July 2012, with initial affiliation from Dibrugarh University, one of Assam’s most prestigious institutions. Starting with just 44 students, the college has now grown to accommodate over 300 students across a variety of disciplines, including:
